Apprenticeships and traineeships
When you do an apprenticeship or traineeship you can work and earn money while training towards a nationally recognised qualification. Full time, part time and school based apprenticeships and traineeships are available.
Apprentices and trainees are contracted to an employer for the time it takes to gain skills in a trade or vocational area - usually between one and four years. An apprentice or trainee:
- is paid to do a job and learn new skills at the same time
- has a variety of jobs and career paths, without having to go to university and
- receives a qualification which is recognised wherever they go in Australia.
SkillsTech Australia offers nationally-recognised training to apprentices and trainees in a way and at a time that suits their workplace. SkillsTech Australia will:
- work with the apprentice/trainee and employer to design a training plan - including what training needs to occur, how that training will be provided, and when/where that training will take place - and support both to make it work
- provide a training record book and any essential training materials at no cost to the apprentice/trainee
- monitor training and apprentice/trainee progression
- organise any additional learning support required (e.g. reading, maths skills) and
- provide advice on fees and charges, and travel and accommodation subsidies.
To find out how you can become an apprentice or trainee, contact the Department of Education, Training and the Arts on 1800 210 210.
School students
Gain a qualification while you finish high school. Increase your job opportunities and complete an apprenticeship or traineeship through SkillsTech Australia.
When you undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship while you're still at school, you can gain credit points towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Ask your school guidance officer for more information.
If you are already working part-time and like your job, why not ask your employer to consider putting you through a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship with SkillsTech Australia.
If you are interested in a particular industry, why not arrange work experience through your school guidance officer or VET coordinator? If you enjoy the work experience and are offered employment in the industry, check with your employer to see if they might put you through a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship with SkillsTech Australia.
TIP: There are a number of group training companies who can assist you with completing an apprenticeship while you're still at school. These include All Trades Queensland, East Coast Apprenticeships, MIGAS, Biga and Electrogroup.
Ask your school guidance officer or VET coordinator for more information on completing an apprenticeship and traineeship through SkillsTech Australia.
